James O’Malley to perform next month

Posted

Center Moriches resident and musician James O’Malley will be performing at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame on Sept. 8. He has appeared on TV, radio, concert stages, and festivals throughout the area.

The Brooklyn-born Center Moriches songwriter composed songs fans call “endearing” and “relatable.”

The Huntington Folk Music Society has called his music: “his soft voice and gentle finger style on the guitar enthralls the most jaded listener. The warm and intimate melodies that he crafts beautifully frame the direct and honest stories that he tells.”

“Over the course of an hour or so, James’s music elicits the same lumps in our throats, and smiles on our faces that we’ve all experienced over many years,” said Todd Evans, of He Bird She Bird.

During his performance he will be playing “I’m Ready” (2001), “If Only In my Dreams” (2005), “Tales To Tell” (2010), “The Writer Remains” (2010), and “Ivyland” (2024).

The event will take place at 3 p.m. at the Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame at 97 Main Street, Stony Brook. Tickets are free with a general admission ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at https://www.limusichalloffame.org/tickets-and-gift-cards/.

Q&A with O’Malley

Tide: What drew you to Center Moriches?

J.O: Almost 24 years ago, my wife Pat and I were looking for a nice town to live in. We drove east along Montauk Hwy till we came to Center Moriches. We stopped for breakfast at The Country Diner in the middle of town, and afterwards, took a little tour of the area and spotted an old Victorian that we fell in love with. To make a long story short, we wound up purchasing that exact house. Sadly, Pat passed away in 2022, but I am still here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Tide: How do you describe your music? And who will enjoy it?

J.O: It could come under a few. Let’s say, contemporary acoustic… Americana... singer-songwriter... folk. There isn’t an age limit, but I’d say those who have lived and experienced life’s ups and downs and still carry on with hope and faith.

Tide: Why play at the LIMEHOF?

J.O: It is a way to show my appreciation for those who have supported and volunteered at the LIMEHOF. It is a wonderful venue with, what I’ve heard, a dedicated listening audience, which is the perfect setting for my music. Many of my pals have had wonderful experiences while there.

Tide: What can people expect of the show?

J.O: I perform solo with a guitar... I have, what’s been called, a filigreed finger style. I decorate my songs using standard and open tunings, as well as fingerpicking.
